An Eighth Air Force Combat Diary: Combat Missions Flown with the 100th Bomb Group, England 1944-1945
Published in Hardcover by Proctor Pubns (16 October, 2001)
Author: John A. Clark
Average review score:

An Eighth Air Force Combat Diary
This book is written by a Co-pilot of the 418th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group based at Thorpe Abbotts, England.

It is his diary of 32 combat missions during the European Theatre of Operations September 1944 to March 1945.

I found this excellently detailed as it was written at the time.
It describes his training as a pilot in the US, the Trans-Atlantic flight in a B-17 from Lincoln, Nebraska to Valley, Wales and flying combat missions over Germany.

Each mission description starts with a copy of his briefing notes which detail engine start, taxi and take off times, target name, altitude formation and callsigns for fighter escorts! Also a newspaper clipping from that day the mission was flown.

Copies of John Clark's combat flight log are included towards the end of the book.

This book is full of photographs never before published; taken of the formations of B-17s streching endlessly across the sky with streaming contrails, the flak clouds over the target, on base scenes of nissen huts in the fog, frost on the trees, aircraft sitting on their hardstands in the early morning mist, and photographs of the crews.

When reading this book, you can visualize everything that is happening, emotions are described and felt when and engine is out, when enemy fighters pass through the formation, when flak burst nearby, or finding that there may not be enough fuel to make it home!

After the war in 1962, 1966, and 1987 he returns to the base he once flew from to find it deteriating even more with each visit.

The only remnants in his last visit is the control tower that has now been restored as a museum and a memorial to those who served with the 100th Bomb Group.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading personal accounts of World War II.

Una muy buena novela
Es una novela de un realismo conmovedor. Muestra hasta que punto degradante pueden llegar ciertos seres por ambición, y hasta que altura se puede elevar el ser humano en su capacidad de amar.
Es una novela que merece ser leída.

Elisabeth of Schonau: A Twelfth Century Visionary (Middle Ages Series)
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (October, 1992)
Author: Anne L. Clark
Average review score:

Fascinating companion to studies of Hildegard of Bingen.
It's hard to believe that Hildegard of Bingen, world-wide hit phenomenon of the mystic nuns tradition, has only become widely popular since the 1960's. Now here is the first biography to do justice to her contemporary and arguably her soul-mate: Elisabeth von Schonau. This book puts our times in a great perspective, since Elisabeth, the spiritual daughter of Hildegard who was her friend and confidant, was actually more popularly received than Hildegard in those early crusader's times. Elisabeth's style was more dramatic and apocalyptic; she may have suffered from the lack of the freedoms that metaphorical readings of scripture can afford. However, she and Hildegard were curiously united at a distance in many profound ways, including the venerating of St. Ursula (Elisabeth was the expert here), and opposing the Cathars, who would have had the exemplary lives of the saints obliterated. This book is unique, well-organized, and all attentions it may receive would be we! ! ll-deserved.

Emperor Jones the Hairy Ape and Mourning Becomes Electra ( Cliffs Notes )

Modernization of Oresteia
Mourning becomes electra is well known as a modernization of the Greek myth of the Oresteria. Perhaps the difference between Aeschylus and O'neill is to some degree a measure of the extent to which the weakening of the sanctions has weakend the emotions with they supported.

Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology
Published in Hardcover by Lewis Publishers, Inc. (23 July, 1997)
Authors: Ian D. Clark and Peter Fritz
Average review score:

The very good book in the field of isotope hydrogeology!
This is one of the best textbooks I have ever read. The book regards the light, stable isotopes so called in hydrogeology - "environmental isotopes". The authors present the occurrence of the environmental isotopes, physical and chemical processes affecting the variations of isotopic composition of different types of waters in understandable, logical manner - starting from the hydrological cycle, from evaporation and water vapor through precipitation and fresh water to groundwaters, mixtures and brines. I think that Fritz's and Clark's book is very usefull especially for those starting the research with the isotopes in waters because such complex processes like the isotope fractionation and the mechanisms of isotope exchange are explained clearly and effectively. Although the big part of the book, what is also important to me, regards the interpretation of isotopic data, possibilities of using them to the evaluation of a water quality, identifying and dating both the modern and the old groundwaters. I refere this book either for those starting the work with stable isotopes in waters or for those having many years practice in that field. In my opinion it is not only the very good textbook but also the very well organized compendium of useful scientific information.
